The traditional process of including your mom, mother-in-law, and others close to you has become much more difficult. As COVID-19 continues to change our world, it’s clear that wedding planning from a distance is the new normal. Everything from your meetings with vendors to dress fittings at home, the Coronavirus means massive changes to the wedding planning process and experience.
We know you don’t want anyone to feel left out — especially your own mom. Here are Emerald Events’ tips for including your mom during the wedding planning process, even when socially distanced.
Five ideas for involving your mother in the wedding planning process, no matter how far apart you are…
Schedule regular FaceTimes and check-ins.
Firstly, your mother will likely miss out on the meetings, fittings, and opportunities for her to give input, so make sure to keep her informed on the latest news and ask for her input on decisions you’re having to make. Set up a weekly Zoom or FaceTime call to keep her in the loop and letting her share in your excitement.
Take plenty of pictures of the process.
Your phone makes it easy to take pictures at significant parts of the planning process, like when you meet and choose florists, cake makers, and your venue. You can create a Pinterest wedding board, too, which puts together all of the details, colours, and aspirational visuals. You might want to FaceTime her when wedding dress shopping so she can see you in your favourite dresses!
Take a virtual venue tour with her.
Invite your mom to tour a venue with you — it’s not easier than ever to tour venues virtually instead of in-person. Get her input and let her feel part of your momentous choices.
Give her a special job.
Giving your mom a specific task is really the best way to make her feel part of the wedding planning process. What’s her favourite thing to do? Put her in charge of RSVPs if she’s not that. Or, ask her to make seating cards if she’s artistic. If she loves research, ask her to put together a list of possible vendors. She feels included and you feel like your load is lightened — win-win!
Her gown shopping should be a special event, too.
Finally, we all know the bride’s dress is the star of the show. That said, your mom’s dress allows her to feel and look her best. Virtual shop together via FaceTime! Or ask her to share photos of the dresses she’s tried on. You can shop online together and share links to the gowns you love best.
